Shiatsu Questions and Answers

What happens during a treatment?

During your first appointment A case history will be taken to develop a complete picture of your health according to the principles of oriental medicine.  An assessment will be made in order to tailor the treatment to your individual needs and a variety of techniques may be used (including cupping and moxa) to improve your energy flow depending on the state of your health, the symptoms you are experiencing, your constitution and general energy levels.  Appointments last between one and two hours, an hour and a half is recommended for your initial treatment.

How Does Shiatsu Work?

A concept of energy (Qi) lies at the centre of the TCM system.  According to TCM, Qi runs through the entire universe and through the bodies of all living organisms.  Good health is seen as a reflection of the smooth flowing of Qi and illness or disease is thought to result from the obstruction of Qi.

The five main organs of the body, i.e. liver, heart, spleen, kidney and lungs, need to be in balance for good health and imbalances between these organs are related directly to patterns of Qi movement.

An example of this is that the 'wood' organs, the liver and the gallbladder assist the earth organs, the spleen and stomach, in digesting food.  Thus a poorly functioning liver often correlates with poor digestion, a link which is sometimes not made in mainstream medicine.

Qi flows throughout the body in a series of channels called meridians which run along nerve pathways and as well as relating to our internal organs, they relate to our emotions and spiritual harmony.  To address symptoms Geraldine stimulates the Qi by using hands, knees, elbows, knees and feet to support and move the body’s energy flow.  This relieves tension to promote healing and relaxation.

How will I benefit from a Shiatsu treatment?

Anyone can receive a treatment and in my experience everyone benefits.  If you just want time out to relax, or help for a particular problem, a treatment will benefit you greatly, you will have a deep sense of relaxation, well-being, focus and clarity.

It is also a great opportunity to ‘switch off’ to reconnect with the silence within.  Within that silence lie your answers and healing.

Shiatsu, as well as being a highly dynamic form of therapy is also a very effective form of preventative medicine.

What is the difference between Shiatsu and acupuncture?

Shiatsu is much more physical and nurturing than acupuncture, but similar in that it is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine.  It harmonises the functions of our internal organs, subsequently balancing our physical and emotional well-being without the use of needles.

When can Shiatsu help?

If you feel that there is something physical or emotional that may be holding you back.

If you would like to focus more clearly on a particular area of your life for healing or balance.

To complement Western medicine, if your GP has been consulted, yet you think you would benefit from a holistic focus.

If you deserve more relaxation, a treat or need some ‘me time’.

Shiatsu can specifically help muscular tension, back and neck ache, headaches, migraine, digestive disorders, respiratory difficulties, menstrual and reproductive problems, stress-related disorders, arthritic conditions, emotional difficulties, insomnia, enhancing well-being and much more.

How will I feel after the treatment?

You will be left with a feeling of well-being, tranquillity and relaxation with renewed energy, improved health and a better perspective.

It is advisable to relax afterwards, drink water, avoid alcohol so that you will fully appreciate all the benefits.
